Our client is looking to appoint a Pulsed Energy Component Scientist. It is important that you are methodical, ordered in your approach.
Purpose
To research and develop new specialised high voltage component technologies (lightning arrestor connectors, HV (high voltage) capacitors, OV (over voltage) gaps and HV Switches) and validate these components in harsh military environments.

Key accountabilities
- To aid in the design of components including developing new device specifications and understanding the associated manufacturing processes
- To understand and use the facilities and associated tools to aid in the design and development process
- To update and improve the existing Research and Development (R&D) test facility to incorporate modern techniques, tools, instrumentation and safety practices as required
- To identify commercial capacitors appropriate for Firing Unit (FU) application, which includes maintaining a watching brief on the UK capacitor industry.
- Undertake recruitment activities as necessary to meet evolving team requirements
- Act as deputy to Team/Technical Leads as and when required
Responsibilities
- To assess components by physical and electrical tests at both low and high voltages
- Analyse results to derive probability information in order to estimate device reliability
- To help plan and conduct the tests and trials, or organise these with other groups
- Ensure understanding and apply responsibilities with regard to the Company’s Environment, Health, Safety, Security and Quality Standards
- To be a Nominated Person (Electrical specialist)
Qualifications
- Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical/Electronics, Physics with electronic bias, or related discipline
Knowledge
- Detailed knowledge of capacitors and their application within High Voltage low inductance discharge circuits
- Detailed knowledge of high voltage wound capacitor manufacture and generically the capacitor industry
- A background understanding of Triggered Vacuum Gap Switch tubes and their interface requirements
- Knowledge of low inductance striplines
- A background knowledge of L, C, R ringing discharge circuits
- Knowledge of statistical analysis techniques
- A Background knowledge of lightning arrestor connectors (LACs)
- UK Health and Safety Legislation
- Have an understanding of the operation of all pulsed energy component systems. These include highly specialised components such as rapid discharge capacitors, triggered vacuum switches, over voltage gaps and lightning arrestor connectors
- Detailed knowledge of high voltage components, manufacturing processes and test instrumentation necessary to produce long life high reliability weapons grade components
Experience
- Demonstrable experience in the design and development of electronic/electrical systems or components in a Quality Assurance environment
- Managing (small) multidiscipline teams in the development of electronic/electrical systems or components
- Management of external contracts including development activities
- Reliability analysis
Skills
- Good workshop engineering and experimental skills
- Attention to detail as applied: to making components, jigs, testing, recording and analysis of test results
- Use of PC tools: Word-processing, Spreadsheets, Databases and Drawing
- Good verbal and written communication skills
