- Pinpoint what it was about your career that enhanced your satisfaction and success in the past 12 months
- Pinpoint what it was about your career that hindered your success in the past 12 months
- What new challenges did you tackle this year and what did you learn?
Now it’s time to look towards the future and use this end of year reflection to inspire new year professional success.
Why is it important to set career goals?
Would you get in your car and set off on a journey without knowing or planning where you are going? We suspect not. Not setting goals is like embarking on a journey without having a destination in mind. By setting the right goals, you are mobilising your focus and steering your career in the right direction.
Furthermore, when you commit to achieving a goal and hit it, you are building self-worth and gaining the confidence you need to chase more ambitious goals.
Strategies to help you set and achieve professional goals for 2024:
When you visualise you create a picture in your mind of what you want to achieve. Visualisation is highly effective as it directs our subconscious to the outcome we are trying to accomplish and then works to prepare our mind and body for the reality. As stated in this article, ‘By visualising yourself hitting a goal, you’re actually training your brain to perform in a way that will help you reach that goal. When you visualize yourself hitting a specific goal, your brain interprets that imagery as reality.’
Write your goals down
“Vividly describing your goals in written form is strongly associated with goal success, and people who very vividly describe or picture their goals are anywhere from 1.2 to 1.4 times more likely to successfully accomplish their goals.”
Mark Murphy, Forbes
Turn your attention away from other priorities, take a journal and write down exactly what you want to achieve in the next 12 months. Writing down goals helps to narrow our focus and break goals down into more manageable steps.
Know your why
“When you find your WHY, you don’t hit snooze no more! You find a way to make it happen!”
Why are your goals important to you? How do you envision them impacting your career this year? Finding your why is how you form an emotional connection to your goals, it’s your deep-seated motivation.
Set Smart Goals
Goals should be specific, realistic and measurable. Your goal may be to work as a lab technician, but that goal will not manifest without following a series of well-defined steps that will take you from where you are now to where you want to be. Be specific about what you want to achieve, for example, instead of saying ‘I want to be promoted to Senior Scientist”, say ‘I will be Senior Scientist in x division at x company by 12th August 2024’.
Your goals should have deadlines and they should set you up to win, not fail. They should also be relevant to the direction you want your career to take.

State your goals as if you’ve already achieved them
Our minds operate in the now, so state your goals in the present tense, this will also trick your mind into believing that the goal is already true. So, instead of saying ‘I want to work as a QA Analyst for a global pharmaceutical company’, reword it to reflect it accomplishment in the now, i.e ‘I am loving my role as a QC Analyst for a global pharmaceutical company’.
Create a strategy gap for your goals
“A goal without a plan is just a wish.”
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
What do you need to do to get what you want? If you do not have a clearly defined plan, you will struggle to bring your goals to fruition.
Planning is essential, but you need to take deliberate action to make your goals a reality.
