Research & Development (R&D) Technician

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced research or R&D technician to join an exciting medical device start up on a permanent basis. Combining technical, clinical and management expertise to develop advanced, miniaturised biometric sensors, the company are developing an innovative monitoring device to measure key indicators of fertility. Based at their site in Southampton, the candidate will perform a variety of tasks to support the development of a new medical product.  The role will involve supporting the team with fabrication of parts, assembly of devices, testing complete devices and general lab duties.

The successful candidate will need to be organized, rigorous and exhibit excellent practical skills, and will be responsible for the following:

  • Follow detailed assembly processes and procedures to assemble prototypes for product development, including the assembly of low-volume, pre-production runs
  • Undertake the fabrication of components for inclusion into products according to established processes and procedures
  • Complete/maintain build and process records
  • Operate a range of product assembly equipment and inspection equipment, including adhesive dispensing, adhesive curing, milling, cleaning etc.
  • Work within a multi-disciplinary team, including research scientists, clinical professionals, electronic engineers and software engineers.

Successful candidates must ideally have at least an HND qualification (or equivalent) in a relevant area with at least 3 years’ experience of a precision engineering environment. Experience of working within an R&D environment would be desirable. Other experience that would be beneficial:

  • Experience with precision assembly techniques, adhesive bonding, soldering, casting, moulding
  • Experience with device testing for both mechanical and electrical performance according to set protocols
  • Experience with assembly of devices (preferably miniature) and following assembly protocols
  • Meticulous attention to detail and desire to take ownership of tasks.
