Role: Technical Scientist

Salary: £25,000 – £35,000 per annum
A client based in Nottingham who specialise in nanomaterials are looking to recruit a technical scientist to join their expanding team. The ideal candidate will have experience or a keen interest in one or all areas: synthetic chemistry, material science and nanotechnology.
Key Areas of Responsibility
The Technical Scientist will have responsibility for a broad range of activities including, but not limited to:
- Leading the technical work on commercial R&D projects
- Chemical synthesis and nanomaterial dispersions, including Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs), using continuous-flow equipment (bench scale and pilot scale)
- Performing characterisation analysis on synthesised materials and interpretation of characterisation data
- Experimental design and planning
- Writing and presenting of technical reports
- Technical communication both internally and externally
- General laboratory tasks such as maintaining the laboratory space and equipment
- Good laboratory practice, adherence to Health & Safety procedures, and accurate experimental recording/note taking
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Required:
- Degree-level qualification or higher in chemistry, materials science or a related subject
- ≥3 years of prior practical laboratory experience
- Proficient spoken and written English, including the ability to write and compile technical documents
- IT skills: competence in using Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel
- Communication and interpersonal skills: ability to discuss technical issues in a professional manner in a commercial setting (both internally and externally)
- Presentation skills: ability to present technical work at both internal and external events
- Good time keeping and ability to work to deadlines (particularly working on several projects in parallel)
- Knowledge and/or experience of standard material characterisation techniques (e.g., XRD, TEM, SEM, DLS, FTIR, N2 adsorption)
- Ability to work in a commercial setting, e.g. appreciation of confidential or proprietary information and ability to meet commercial targets and timescales
- Applicants must be authorised to work in the UK without restrictions
- Willingness to travel (<10% of time)
The following are highly desirable but not essential:
- Practical laboratory experience specifically in an industrial environment
- Knowledge and/or experience of synthesising nanomaterials or MOFs
- Previous experience of using continuous-flow equipment for particle synthesis is useful, however training will be provided
